Who we are
myHata (“myHata”, “we”, “us”) is an independent app based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
It watches a home address you choose and sends you notifications built from public civic
data. For anything in this policy, contact us at
hello@myhata.app.
What we collect
In the app
- Home address(es) you enter, and the coordinates, neighbourhood and
snow-plow zone derived from them. This is the address you choose to watch — we never read
your device's GPS location, and the app does not request location permission.
- A push notification token (Apple Push Notification service) so our
server can deliver alerts to your device. A notification payload may include the alert
category and the home address it relates to, so the app can open the right home and card
when you tap it.
- A random device identifier assigned by our server when you register.
It is not your Apple ID, advertising ID or anything reusable outside myHata.
- Your notification preferences (which alert categories are on, how often).
- Basic usage events (app opened, notification opened, tab viewed, card
expanded), tagged with the device identifier above, so we can see which features are used.
We built this analytics ourselves; there are no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs
in the app.
On this website
- Your email address, if you sign up for launch updates, plus whether you
ticked the beta-tester box and basic technical details of the submission (browser
user-agent). We send one email when we launch, and beta invitations if you asked for them.
- City requests, if you ask us to bring myHata to another city: the city,
region, your email address, role, optional note, source page and browser user-agent.
- Partner enquiries, if you contact us through a partner, advertiser,
press or data-provider form: your name, email address, organization, enquiry type,
optional message, source page and browser user-agent.
- Standard server logs (IP address, requested page, browser
user-agent), kept briefly for security and debugging — as on virtually every website.
What we don't do
- No accounts, names, phone numbers or payment details.
- No tracking across other apps or websites; no advertising identifiers.
- No selling or renting of personal information — to anyone, ever.
How we use it
- To match public civic data (permits, 311 requests, emergency calls, outages, alerts)
against the location of the home you watch and notify you.
- To schedule reminders (collection days, snow bans, seasonal upkeep) on your device.
- To understand, in aggregate, which features are used and improve the app.
- To send the launch/beta emails you asked for.
- To reply to city requests, partner enquiries, press enquiries and data-provider
conversations you start with us.
Where your data lives
On servers located in Canada (Quebec). Data is transmitted over HTTPS. Apple processes
push notifications through its Apple Push Notification service as part of delivering them
to your device.
Connections the app makes
Some information is fetched by the app directly from your device rather than through
our servers. Like any internet connection, these requests reveal your device's IP address
to the service being contacted:
- Apple Maps. Nearby facilities (emergency rooms, pharmacies,
veterinary clinics) and drive times are looked up through Apple's MapKit using the
coordinates of the home you chose to watch — not your device's GPS. Apple processes
these lookups under Apple's privacy policy.
- Public data feeds. The app also reads some public feeds directly
(for example Manitoba Hydro's outage map and hospital wait-time pages). These requests
carry no personal information beyond what any web request carries.
Sharing
We do not sell or rent personal information. We share it only as needed to run myHata:
with hosting and database infrastructure providers, Apple for push notifications and
MapKit lookups, email delivery providers when we send messages you requested, and
professional advisers or authorities if required by law. Administrative dashboards for
signups, enquiries and aggregate metrics are access-controlled and used only for operating
and improving the Service.
How long we keep it
- Device, address and preferences: kept while your device is registered
for alerts. Deleted when you use Delete my data in the app's Settings, and removed
automatically when your push token becomes invalid (for example, after you delete the app).
- Event de-duplication records: kept briefly so we do not send you the
same alert repeatedly; routine cleanup removes old records after about 90 days.
- Usage events: stored with the random device identifier and kept for
product statistics until they are no longer needed. Once your device registration is
deleted, that identifier no longer links to any address, push token or preferences, so
past events can no longer be tied to you.
- Launch-list emails: kept until we've sent the launch announcement (and
beta invitations, if requested), then removed. You can ask us to remove yours at any time.
- City requests and partner enquiries: kept while we evaluate or respond
to the request, then removed when no longer needed. You can ask us to remove yours at any
time.
- Server logs: kept briefly for security, debugging and abuse prevention,
then rotated or deleted.
Your choices
- Delete your data: Settings → Delete my data in the app removes
your address, push token and preferences from our servers immediately. Deleting the app has
the same effect once your push token expires.
- Access or correct: email
hello@myhata.app and we'll show you what we hold about
your device or email address, fix it, or delete it.
- Unsubscribe: every email we send includes an unsubscribe link.
Your rights under Canadian law
We handle personal information in accordance with the Personal Information Protection
and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). You may request access to, correction of, or
deletion of your personal information, and you may withdraw consent at any time by deleting
your data as described above. If you're unsatisfied with our response, you may contact the
Office of the Privacy
Commissioner of Canada.
Children
myHata is intended for homeowners and is not directed at children under 13. We do not
knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Material changes
will be highlighted in the app or by email where appropriate.
